If there is a strength that sets Chris and Sasha Holtkamp apart, it’s their dedication to each other and their family. Chris, who went as far as to drive from California to Colorado to surprise Sasha before they were married, has obviously demonstrated no a lack of commitment when it comes to his family. Chris, 32, and Sasha, 29, have two sons together and would both like to change their sedentary lifestyles.
Chris, a plumber for Rescue Rooter, would like to lose 110 pounds so he can be more active with his sons. “I want to be able to comfortably run behind my son when I teach him to ride his bicycle,” he says.
Sasha, an Educational Aide with the Adelanto School District, realizes that it’s not a good thing the evening crew of the local McDonald’s knows her and her children on a first name basis. Sasha, who once jumped off the roof of a house into a backyard pool, is very friendly and outgoing in nature, and she is looking forward to challenging herself. In fact, her co-workers ensure she does this by calling her every morning at 7:00 am to go walking. “They call and ask ‘are you coming? Let’s go walking!” Sasha says. Sasha hopes to lose 70 to 100 pounds so that she can teach her kids better eating habits.
The duo agrees that their biggest weakness is consistency. They have both previously tried the Atkins diet and lost 15 pounds each, but found the strict, no carb regimen too unrealistic for them to stick with. Sasha even tried a soup diet, but the only thing she lost during that diet was her affinity for soup.
At the beginning of the competition, Sasha and Chris felt a bit a friction in their relationship, as Chris’s drive was wearing thin on Sasha’s patience. But now, Sasha realizes that it’s his perseverance that keeps them going. “I would have broken down already if it wasn’t for him,” Sasha says thankfully.
Chris and Sasha feel that this competition will be good for their family and they knew they had to take advantage of this opportunity. “I realize that if I don’t do this know,” Chris admits, “it probably won’t happen for us.”
