When a commercial comes on the television for some sumptuous meal from a restaurant like TGI Friday’s or Applebee’s, this is the most the frustrating time for Richard Robles. Now that he is part of the Slim Down Challenge, these commercials are nothing more than a tease for this ex-food addict. “My wife forces me to change the channel so I won’t give into temptation,” Richard admits.
Richard and Rena Robles form Team “Two Peas in a Pod.” Richard, 35, is hoping to lose least 50 pounds to help diminish his high cholesterol and high blood pressure. If he loses enough weight, he’ll no longer need insulin for his Diabetes. From what he’s learned from his nutritionist, Richard now knows he needs to eat at least 1000 calories a day. He has applied himself to working out vigorously, walking three miles in the morning and three miles at night.
Rena, 26, is young and wants to be more active while she has her youth. She’s tired of buying big clothes and not being able to go on certain rides at amusement parks. For her, the competition has been informative and she has learned a lot about eating healthy and exercising, things she wouldn’t have known if she hadn’t signed up. “I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to lose weight, as well as all the free resources that comes with it,” Rena says. Though she gets frustrated that the scale isn’t giving her the feedback she anticipated, she continues to count calories and work out.
Richard is hoping he can eventually take off his shirt at the beach or at a public pool without having to be embarrassed. He also wants to become more active with sports and simply get rid of all the prescriptions he’s taking for health issues that are a direct result of his weight.
Rena and Richard are excited to see a group of people together who are concerned about their weight and who are willing to do something about it. “It’s encouraging when everyone is so positive,” Rena says, “It makes you positive.”
